The Interview Question Companies Don’t Ask Enough: Why Do You Want This Job?

Hiring managers spend a lot of time asking candidates whether they can do the job.

Do they have the right experience? Have they managed a similar team? Do they understand the industry?

But there’s another question that can be just as important:

Why do they actually want the job?

Understanding a candidate’s motivation can tell you a lot about whether they’ll accept an offer, succeed in the role, and ultimately stay.

Being Qualified and Being Motivated Are Different

A candidate can check every box and still be wrong for the opportunity.

Maybe they’re primarily looking for a higher salary. Maybe they want a bigger title. Or perhaps they’re genuinely excited about the company’s growth, leadership team, and responsibilities they’ll be taking on.

None of these motivations should automatically determine the decision. But understanding them gives hiring managers a much clearer picture of what the candidate expects from the role.

Go Beyond “Why Do You Want to Work Here?”

Candidates are prepared for that question.

Instead, dig deeper:

  • What would make you leave your current position?
  • What are you hoping your next role gives you that you don’t have today?
  • What would make this opportunity a successful move for you?
  • Where do you want your career to go next?

The goal isn’t to hear the “right” answer. It’s to understand whether the candidate’s goals align with what the company can realistically offer.

Motivation Can Matter Long After the Offer

Understanding why someone wants the job can also help set expectations before they join.

If a candidate wants significant advancement but the role has limited upward mobility, that’s worth discussing early. If they’re looking for greater autonomy, the hiring manager should know whether the position can actually provide it.

Those conversations can prevent mismatched expectations on both sides.

Why Companies Partner With Quest

At Quest, we spend time understanding not only whether candidates are qualified, but why they’re considering a move in the first place.

That insight helps our clients evaluate fit, navigate offers, and identify candidates whose goals align with the opportunity.

Because the question isn’t only whether someone can do the job.

It’s whether this is the job they actually want.
