Single Family Offices that have transitioned to the second generation have been trending higher towards alternative investments than the first generation.
The alternative investments which include hedge funds, direct investments and private equity investments are becoming a larger part of the SFO portfolio. We are seeing a significant move towards direct investments.
One of the reasons for the move towards private investments is to avoid the fees associated with third party investments and another reason is the desire to use their entrepreneurial background to capitalize on their knowledge of specific industries such as real estate or manufacturing of a particular product.
The second generation is seeking greater returns, more impact investing and they are aiming to preserve the wealth of the family.
