If you are in the unfortunate position where you are seeing signs of potential layoffs at your company, there are a number of things that you can do to be prepared for them.

Here are some of the steps we would recommend:

1) Prepare an updated resume. This should be done with great care and should not be just a quick list of your job history and responsibilities. Your resume is a true reflection of your entire background and experience, and if there are typos or grammatical errors, you may be eliminated immediately for potential jobs.
2) Update your Linkedin profile, as many prospective employers look on Linkedin for potential candidates for their jobs.
3) Take the time to think carefully about your next move, both for the short and long-term. This should incorporate the industry, size of the company, type of position, your career goals, etc.
4) Review the job boards to see the types of positions that are being posted that would match your background and requirements and respond to those that are appropriate.
5) Look for recruiting firms that may specialize in your industry of expertise and consider reaching out to a select few.
6) Network among friends, previous employers and employees, colleagues, etc.
7) Utilize your benefits in case they run out (doctors, dentists, gym access, etc).
8) If possible, negotiate a severance package (check on your company’s policy to see if they have one).
9) Begin your job search while you are still employed, as you have more leverage as an employed candidate.
10) Decide on whether you will go to the office everyday (if required), or will only work on a hybrid or remote basis. Those who will go to the office have an advantage over those who will not.
