With inflation skyrocketing and government subsidies being reduced or eliminated, you would expect that more and more people would be returning to work.
Currently there are over 11MM job openings in the U.S. There are several reasons why so many companies are having a difficult time filling their jobs.

1) The pandemic caused many aging baby-boomers to retire earlier than they would have and many of them are not going back to work
2) Many workers became accustomed to working from home and will not go back to traveling to the office for work
3) Many workers have taken on jobs with more flexibility so that they can work less hours and work from home and will not work full time anymore
4) Lack of childcare or the ability to care for the elderly
5) Immigration decreased due to the pandemic and changes in immigration policy, resulting in fewer people coming into the country to take positions normally filled by immigrants
6) Workers are demanding a higher level of compensation due to higher costs of living and a strong demand for workers
7) Many workers have died due to the virus
